History

Curlew Crafts was established in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2025 with the aim of creating handmade craft items using locally and ethically sustainable materials. My eco-crafts company has evolved with a business ethos which has authentic local origins and inspirations.

About Stephanie

My background has been a mixture of Costume Design, where I discovered my love of textiles, and Organic Growing, which reflected my concerns for the environment, locally produced items, recycling and re-use. I spent over 5 years growing and selling at Farmer's and Craft Markets in Edinburgh, and throughout the Scottish Borders and Northumberland.

When I lived in the Scottish Borders, I developed a great love for traditional Scottish textiles, so I am fulfilling a longstanding ambition to incorporate the Tartans and Tweeds which Scotland is famous for, into my work. My locally and ethically sustainable materials come directly from local businesses and shops, so there are many indirect benefits to buying Curlew Crafts products.

A Note about Tartans

Because the Locally Inspired Collection uses remnants, the beautiful Tartans are not identified when I get them. There are estimated to be several thousand Tartans presently in existence. Although I could spend time searching the Scottish Register of Tartans in order to identify the remnants I get, this would unfortunately add to the price. I have therefore opted to trial selling them as unidentified, with no disrespect towards the heritage associations of this famous fabric intended. I would welcome any feedback about this.

If you are looking for a particular Clan, District or Company Tartan, it is always best to deal with the suppliers, kilt or garment shops directly. I am happy to recommend some of the best companies.
